What happened at Colorado's Special Session? Janice Rich Explains

Governor Polis called for the First Extraordinary Session of the Seventy-Second General Assembly, to begin Monday, November 30, 2020. The Republican Caucus had originally called for a Special Session in August in an effort to help those who have suffered by the government-imposed shutdown. That request was turned down by the Governor.

When a Special Session is called, Bills that do not fall within the scope are now allowed. The scope laid out by the Governor for the Special Session included: Small Business relief; Child Care; Housing and Direct Assistance; Broadband; Food Insecurity; Utilities Assistance; and Public Health Response. When a Special Session is called, Bills that do not fall within the specific scope are not allowed.

While both parties introduced proposed Bills, only 10 Bills introduced by the Democrats passed out of committee and passed in both Houses. All Republican Bills died in committee.
