A Note From the Chair - Did You Know That The RNC...
Did you know that the RNC had a co-chair?
Neither did I until I got an invitation to the October Capital Club luncheon last week. I thought Ronna McDaniel was it- flying solo. Not so. Tommy Hicks is her co-chair. So a little background is called for.
Tommy is a 41-year-old private equity investor from Dallas who joined the Trump team in 2016. Since then he has played a key role raising money and trying to unify Texas Republican donors. Additionally, he is creating a structure in which the RNC and Trump campaign are closely integrated.
He is known as a “true believer”. According to those around him, he is trusted by the Trumps and has the experience and connections to do the job. And he’s in it for the right reason- to help Trump on his “mission to win.”
So on to his presentation. What are the RNC’s plans for 2020? They plan on an immense ground game- 2 million volunteers. They have also put $330mil into the data/digital operation with access for all of us paid for by the RNC and Trump campaign.
There will also be a big push on Hispanics. They are moving toward the Republican party but they’re not vocal about it. Messaging for them will focus on health care and school choice.
He said that McConnell is committed to focusing on Cory’s race and that Trump and Cory have endorsed each other.
Some interesting random comments:
They are only targeting low propensity voters.
They are starting in bigger markets first.
They plan to flip- Colorado by 2024. YEAH!
They plan to flip Minnesota and New Mexico this year.
They plan to hold Arizona.
They capture voter data at all events and share with us.
They are committed to building infrastructure which is their job, not necessarily to support candidates.
He reminded us that everyone is a messenger and we should be optimistic and spread the word that the Republican party is the party of American values. When talking about Trump, we should highlight his promises made, promises kept and that he’s accomplished more in his first 21/2 years than most presidents do in 8.
He closed on a personal note, commenting on Trump’s amazing energy that relates across all socio-economic levels. He accompanied the President to the recent meeting of the UN General Assembly. Typically, leaders participate in maybe 2 individual meetings with other leaders. Trump had 11 and attended a fundraiser that night.
PS. He recommended reading “Groundbreakers: How Obama's 2.2 Million Volunteers Transformed Campaigning in America”.
Then Jefferson Thomas, head of the Trump campaign in Colorado, spoke briefly. They have the largest staff ever this early in a campaign in Colorado and are making 10,000 contacts per week. They have doubled their commitment from 2016 and are committed to providing infrastructure for all candidates. If you need anything from the Trump campaign, contact Jefferson at Jthomas@gop.com
